New Bishop of GKPI

At its recent 16th Term General Synod Meeting from September 14-18, Christian Protestant Church in Indonesia (GKPI) elected Rev Mangsisi S E Simorangkir as its new Bishop and the Rev Maurids Simamora as the church General Secretary. Bishop Simorangkir took over the leadership from Rev G O P Manurung for a term of five years from 2005-2010.
The elected bishop was installed on September 18.

Bishop Simorangkir graduated from Theological Seminary in Jakarta in 1977 and was ordained as a pastor in 1978. He had served in parishes in Medan and Lubuk Pakam and also as exchanged pastor in a German parish from 1982-1987. After his return from Germany, he was appointed the Director of the Diaconical and Community Development Ministry of GKPI from 1987-1992.

The global Lutheran communion comprises 140 member churches in 78 countries with a total membership of 66.2 million Christians. The size of the communion, together with the many different traditions and customs it embraces, is an impressive expression of Christian unity in our world. The annual Lutheran World Federation Sunday-held on or around Reformation Sunday-celebrates and gives thanks for this rich diversity.

The LWF Council adopted the idea of LWF Sunday in 1995 in hope that churches would celebrate such a day every year beginning in 1997 when the Federation commemorated its fiftieth anniversary. Lutheran Church in Korea elects new President

News Release, Seoul, Korea – At the 2005 annual convention of the Lutheran Church in Korea (LCK) which convened October 5-6 at Sarang Maeul Lutheran Church in Kwangju, Rev Dr Hyun-Sup UM was elected to a four-year term as the new president of the LCK

A graduate of Yonsei University (BTh & MTh), the Lutheran Theological Academy (MDiv.), and Concordia Seminary in St Louis (STM & Honorary DD), Rev Um (59) has been teaching at Lutheran University/Seminary as an Old Testament professor for 25 years.

Dr Meshack is New Principal of Gurukul

Dr. Samuel W Meshack, India, ChennaiThe principal of Gurukul Lutheran Theological Seminary and Research Center (GLTC) India, Chennai, Rev Dr Mani Chacko, has left his post to take up a new assignment at the Ecumenical Christian Centre, Bangalore from June 2006.

The Rev Dr Samuel W Meshack was officially appointed as the new Principal of Gurukul from June 2006. The installation service was held on 11th June 2006 at Gurukul.

Federation of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia & Singapore

FELMS Leaders
The Federation of Evangelical Lutheran Churches Malaysia (FELCMS) had its General Meeting at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in May 2006. At the meeting, Bishop Julius Paul (ELCM) was elected as Chairperson, Bishop Voo Thien Fui (BCCM) as Secretary and Bishop Philip Lok (LCMS) as Treasurer.

The membership of FELCMS includes the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia (ELCM), Lutheran Church in Malaysia & Singapore (LCMS), Protestant Church in Sabah (PCS), Basel Christian Church in Malaysia (BCCM), Sabah Theological Seminary (STS) and the Lutheran Church in Singapore (LCS).

The FELCMS regularly organizes programmes that would benefit member churches in Malaysia and Singapore.
