On May 5, 2006 LWF/DWS (Department for World Service) Cambodia was awarded the Cambodia National Reconstruction Medal together with a certificate acknowledging its good partnership with the Cambodian National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), signed by H.E, Samdech Hun Sen the Prime Minister.

This is testimony to the dedication, commitment and hard work by the LWF staff under difficult circumstances in rural Cambodia. The work of LWF Cambodia is also the work of all LWF member churches and we should be very proud of this good work in partnership with the people of Cambodia.

The reconstruction of Cambodia since 1979 has indeed been remarkable. The LWF/DWS Cambodia has made a difference to the many villages being resettled, reorganized and in the process of developing. Much of the work is undertaken in relatively remote villages where LWF/DWS Cambodia is the only non-government organization (NGO) available.

The award acknowledges the good partnership between the LWF program and the Cambodian National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), which includes organization of some 200-village disaster-preparedness committees and funding for over 200 disaster mitigation projects.

The disaster preparedness work is however only part of LWF/DWS Cambodia’s Integrated Rural Development through Empowerment Projects which now cover 427 villages in ten districts in three provinces with the goal of gradually empowering rural Cambodians to take over their own sustainable development processes.
