Letter from Japan Lutheran Church to the LWF

Dear Rev. Martin,

I am writing on behalf of Rev. Yutaka Kumei, NRK president and the Japan Lutheran Church (NRK). My name is Shinri Emoto and I am the Vice President of the NRK and interim Mission Secretary.

We would like to thank you and the LWF, for your consistent concern and prayers. We have received messages of support and encouragement from churches around the world. It is a wonderful thing to see how the body of Christ comes together at a time like this.

This earthquake has been very different from past ones in that the impacted area is spread very wide. The Japanese government is organizing rescue and relief efforts but the basic infrastructure which is needed to reach many of the hardest hits areas is just starting to be established. We are trying our best to follow the directions coming from the government.

As you may know the NRK is small church body so we don’t have an established human relief group.

This kind of massive disaster is something which we are not prepared to handle. We have set up a way to receive monetary donations. The collected money will be used as a support to people in the earthquake and tsunami area. We will work with the pastor and members of Fukushima Izumi Lutheran Church to identify areas of need. At this time we are not in a position to organize donation of supplies or volunteers.

Right now you are probably also hearing news of the Daiichi Nuclear plant in Fukushima Prefecture. We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds. Our churches in Koriyama and Fukushima City are to the west of the power plant and are not included in the current area of concern. At this point in time it is believed to be safe to remain in Tokyo.

In Christ,
Shinri Emoto
