Major Dengue Fever Outbreak

Dengue Aedes Mosquito Malaysia’s dengue deaths mount, worst not yet over KUALA LUMPUR – DEATHS from dengue fever in Malaysia have risen by a third so far this year and health authorities said that the worst is yet to come.

The mosquito-borne virus has killed hundreds in South-east Asia this year, prompting the World Health Organisation to warn that the Western Pacific region could be at risk from a major dengue outbreak.

Malaysia recorded 30,285 dengue cases so far this year with 65 deaths, up from 20,258 cases and 49 deaths in the first seven months of 2006, said Mr Hasan Abdul Rahman, director of the Health Ministry’s Diseases Control Division.

‘There is a rising trend of dengue cases across the country,’ he said in a statement on Friday.

The Rev. Susan Johnson is to become the first woman to hold the post of national bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. "I’m just overwhelmed and honoured by this incredible honour," Johnson said after her election at the denomination’s national convention in Winnipeg. She will succeed National Bishop Raymond Schultz, who announced in January that he will retire on 1 September 2007. Meanwhile, the Anglican Church of Canada, meeting in Winnipeg at the same time as the ELCIC, has elected Bishop Fred Hiltz as its new primate, or national leader. He defeated Bishop Victoria Matthews of Edmonton in the final ballot.

The Cathedral of LundStrengthening the Bonds of Communion, Shaping a Vision for the Future

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) 60th anniversary celebrations during next year’s LWF Council meeting in Lund, Sweden, will include a church leadership consultation. Including women and youth leaders, it will gather together the heads of all LWF member churches.

In a letter to the member churches, LWF General Secretary, Rev. Dr Ishmael Noko writes that the Council meeting and anniversary celebrations will take place 21*27 March 2007. LWF President, Bishop Mark S. Hanson will address the event that will combine the two-day church leadership consultation and a four-day Council meeting.

On May 5, 2006 LWF/DWS (Department for World Service) Cambodia was awarded the Cambodia National Reconstruction Medal together with a certificate acknowledging its good partnership with the Cambodian National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), signed by H.E, Samdech Hun Sen the Prime Minister.

This is testimony to the dedication, commitment and hard work by the LWF staff under difficult circumstances in rural Cambodia. The work of LWF Cambodia is also the work of all LWF member churches and we should be very proud of this good work in partnership with the people of Cambodia.
