The political – not religious – nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was the central theme of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL) Bishop Munib A Younan's July 15 address in Pori, Finland. Bishop Younan delivered his speech, "Reconciliation in the Middle East," to a conference of the UN Association of Finland and the Finnish Red Cross, in cooperation with the Tampere Peace Research Institute.

The Lutheran Church in Singapore (LCS) installed its new bishop, Rev Terry Kee, at a special installation service held on the Sunday afternoon of 24th May 2009.Rev Terry Kee succeeds Bishop John Tan as the second bishop of the Lutheran Church in Singapore since its formation in 1997. The installation service for the new Bishop and Executive Committee at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer was attended by about 300 people including local mainline denomination church and seminary leaders, representatives of Lutheran churches from the region and missions agencies worldwide. Every year the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea (ELCPNG) observes the first Sunday of May as the National Youth Sunday. On May 3 this year, all congregations throughout the seventeen (17) districts of ELCPNG observe the day in supporting the Youth Ministries with prayers and thanksgiving.One of ELCPNG’s oldest youth hall, Immanuel Youth Hall, built by the then active Lae Lutheran Youth (LLY) of ELCPNG in the 1970’s, came to life that day. The Redeemer Parish congregations in Lae city gathered at the hall for Sunday Service and many youth participated in leading the worship in music and songs, creative dance and drama. “Living Witness - Creative Diakonia” is the theme for the upcoming ELCJHL 50th anniversary celebration. The synod will also observe the 30th anniversary of the Arabic bishopric and 170 years of evangelical mission in Palestine. Festivities will kick off on May 16 at the campus of the Lutheran school and church in Beit Sahour. School children will present dabka dancing, singing and drama performances. Items made at the schools, such as candles and ceramics, will be put up for sale. A book fair will feature books by church pastors and lay people. KUALA LUMPUR: The new head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia (ELCM) promises to forge greater inter-religious tolerance and understanding between the different faiths in the country. "I not only want to serve the church, people and the Lord, I want to foster greater unity among Malaysians," said Bishop Right Reverend Dr Solomon Rajah at his consecration and installation ceremony at the Zion Cathedral in Brickfields yesterday. The body of the late Bishop Julius D Paul, 63, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia (ELCM) was finally laid to rest at the Subang Lutheran Garden, Malaysia, on December 9. This put an end to the anguish of his family who had waited 16 days for papers from the various authorities to bring his body home from Guatemala where he drowned in a boat accident last month. News of the sudden and untimely death of Bishop Julius Paul had taken the local Christian community and international Lutheran communion with shock and sadness. The funeral service at Zion Cathedral in Brickfields, KL, was packed with people coming from far and near to pay their last respects to their beloved bishop, mentor, friend.
