Background and history

In 1976, the Asian Lutheran church leaders, meeting in Singapore, took the initiative to launch the Asia Lutheran Press Service (ALPS). Asia Lutheran magazine was published 2 -4 issues per year up to August 2000.

During the annual meeting of the Asia Regional Coordinating Committee (ARCC) in year 2000 and again in 2001, the situation of the Asia Lutheran was raised up for discussion. Several leaders had also expressed they were not sure if the magazine was the best way to serve the need of information in Asia.

The ARCC made the following recommendations:

that the Asia Lutheran be a simple newsletter for the exchange of news and information between member churches and the LWF.
that the preparation and publication of the Asia Lutheran be lodged at the regional office for Asia and that the regional coordinator be responsible for the reporting and implementation of the program.
that instead of engaging a permanent part-time staff for the assignment, the regional coordinator enlists professional help for the publication of the AL newsletter whenever necessary.
that the Asia Lutheran be in the format of a newsletter with effect from January 2002.

Objectives

· To provide regular exchange of news and information between and from the Lutheran churches in Asia to strengthen their ministries;
· to report on church-related news, to improve the coverage of religious (Lutheran in particular) news in the press in church and society;
· to serve as an information source for the churches and the media in Asia and their partners around the world.

LWF Aims and Goals

LWF Aim A:	Strengthen the identity of the LWF as a communion of churches within the worldwide Christian communio
Goal A3:	A public communication program that will enhance the image and awareness of LWF
